The Real Impact that Covid has Had on Our Children

Two years of lockdowns, virtual learning, masks and safety protocols have taken a toll on our children.

There is no doubt that kids have suffered during the pandemic, but what is the real damage that has been done?

While it may be years before we have the real answer to this question, there are three areas that have already become apparent.

  1. Learning Development
  2. Social Skills
  3. Self-esteem

Learning Development

Kids thrive on consistency. Learning is achieved through consistency. And hopefully we are getting back to it as things are starting to open up.

But after two years of inconsistency, it’s not a surprise that almost all kids have fallen behind.

So what, you think to yourself. Every kid is behind, so they are not any worse off than everyone else.

They may not be behind when compared to their classmates, but they are behind when compared to where the average kid their age should be in their learning development.

Being behind in learning is not so concerning.  The fact that your child may not know the capitals of the countries or who the Prime Minister is will not have a long-term impact on them.

Facts are easy to catch up on.

The real danger is that their development in learning how to learn has fallen behind.

While teachers use facts and information for children to learn, the real value in being in school is learning how to learn. The ability to think, reason, recall information, apply concepts and many others, are all skills that every child needs to be successful in life.

And these skills were not properly developed over the last two years.

Now that school is going back to normal, teachers are struggling to catch students up on these skills.

Children in early grades are actually worse off as these are the years where the foundations for these skills are built.

Learning Development

Let’s take Ethan for example.

The teacher is explaining about nouns and verbs while writing definitions and examples on the board. The students are supposed to take notes and most of them do.

Social Skills

The second area where children have suffered because of the pandemic is social skills. While schools are mainly focused on academics, social skills are an important part of the classroom and playground as well.

The interactions that children have together with their peers, contribute to their social skills development.

After two years of being in virtual gatherings, we now realize that seeing a pixel display of others is not the same thing as interacting in person.

Children are now experiencing heightened social anxiety, are more self-conscious of their looks, and don’t know how to pick up on social cues as easily.  They have become shy and unsure of how to interact in person with others.

This loss of social skills will also negatively affect their grades and ability to learn.

Lowered Self-Esteem

The final area where children have suffered is in their self-esteem.  Discovering that your school grades are dropping and struggling to adjust back to the classroom can be hard for kids.

Rather than blame it on the situation and show patience they blame themselves.

A child’s self-esteem is the most important aspect of their identity.

If they start to believe that they are no longer capable then things can go downhill quickly.

This is why it is critical that we focus on showing them that they are making progress and that they are capable.

Moving Past Covid

The question that we are now faced with is – How do we make up for this “lost time”?

What can be done to help children learn how to learn and improve their social skills?

How do we give them a boost to their self-esteem and show them that they can succeed?

That is where Maxi Mind Learning can help.

Our program uses movement, music and technology to strengthen the connections in the brain.  It’s designed to stimulate growth and development throughout the cortex and the cerebellum, key parts of the brain responsible for learning. This results in faster and more accurate processing of information. And processing is the key to success.
